Robson “Robinho” Moura is one of the most incredible Jiu-Jitsu competitors of our time.

From 1997 to 2000 Robson Moura lived a routine at the Jiu-Jitsu Worlds: being champion. He amassed three titles at light featherweight and roosterweight. Robson cherishes each of them dearly: “There were special moments in all of them,” he recalls. The greatest emotion, however, would come seven years later. In 2007, at the first Worlds held in the Long Beach pyramid, Moura decided to return to Jiu-Jitsu’s grand stage. “I’d been out of the world circuit for a number of years and on my return I faced opponents I’d seen when they were blue belts and I was a black belt champion,” recounts Robson.

Despite the age difference, Robson had four world titles and a name to defend. And he defended them well, overcoming the always-dangerous light featherweights from Japan and beating Samuel Cruz in the final on points. After the final whistle blew he shouted: “That’s seven!” including his conquests as a purple and brown belt in his tally. The fifth black belt world title was also a turning point in his extra-competitive career: “That title led me to take another direction, a more serious, more organized and more respecting direction. That was when I realized Jiu-Jitsu is everything to me,” recalls Robson.

Robson ” Robinho ” Moura is one of the most exciting & incredible Jiu-Jitsu competitors of our time. ” Robinho ” won his first World Title at an amazing 18 years old! The following video highlights “Robinho” winning his 7th Gold Medal at the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championships in Long Beach California.

In this segment, Augusto ‘Tanquinho’ Mendes shares the technique he’s been using lately in competition to defeat the 50/50 guard. It’s really important to keep your trapped leg straight so that you keep your opponent from getting underneath you. Once you have a good base and the trapped leg is straight you can stand to break the legs open and then work the pass. There is a lot of subtle movements in this technique so work it with your training partner for a while in drilling before trying it live.
